Costa Rica, in Central America, borders Nicaragua and Panama and lies between the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean. It is a highland and mountainous country with numerous volcanoes, some of them active. The capital is San José, set on the Central Valley plateau, where more than half the population lives. The subequatorial climate brings rain to the Caribbean coast all year round, and to the Pacific coast from May to December. Average temperatures are 26°C on the coast and 18-20°C inland. The best time to visit Costa Rica is the dry season.
