Banjul
Banjul, the capital of the Gambia, lies on St Mary's Island where the Gambia river meets the Atlantic Ocean. The city was founded in 1816 as a military outpost under the name Bathurst. Today it has around 34.4 thousand inhabitants, while the Greater Banjul area is home to 357.2 thousand people. Banjul hosts the country's main ocean port and its international airport. The climate is tropical, with hot summers and mild winters, and the best time to visit is the dry season from November to May.
